Books and More was started by two published novelist with differing levels of success (from none to very little), an aspiring writer and the husband of one of us who, although he works in finance, has some website design skills. Our goal with this project is to promote South African writers and South African books. And when we say South African writers and books, we mean by writers and publishers who are based in South Africa, irrelevant of nationality.
The South African market of readers is way too small. We simply don’t buy enough books, and when we do, the books we buy are mostly from international writers. It’s a travesty that the average South African novelist will only sell 600 to 1000 books in their lifetimes. This is simply not right.
Are we saying we’re going to change that? We hope we can, but to be honest, we don’t know. We don’t know if this project will survive one year, one month or one week. But we’re going to try.
